Reconstruction Testing

Worldwide Genetics offers genetic reconstruction testing to help when an alleged father cannot participate in a paternity test and one or both of his parents are unavailable for a grandparentage test. A reconstruction test compares a child’s DNA profile with the profiles of several close family members of the alleged father to determine if the child is related to the family.

A reconstruction test involves a child, the child’s mother, and at least two close relatives of the child’s alleged father. A close relative may be a biological parent or a full brother or sister of the alleged father. If the child’s mother cannot submit a DNA sample, we can perform a genetic reconstruction with the child and at least three close relatives of the alleged father.

The results of a reconstruction DNA test will tell you whether there is a high likelihood or a low likelihood that the child is related to the tested family members. Because the alleged father was not tested, the results will not state anything about his possible relationship to the child.

As with all of our family relationship DNA tests, our genetic reconstructions are available as both private tests (allowing the tested parties to collect their own DNA samples) and legal tests (which follow the Chain of Custody procedure and are legally defensible). If you are unsure which test option is best for you, please consult with one of our helpful customer service representatives. They will listen to your unique family situation and help you choose the testing option that best fits your needs.
